NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC- Belinda Mairowicz is working hard to open a no-kill animal shelter and she is asking for the community’s help.
Mairowicz rented property at 1500 LD Drive, but is still renovating the building. She opened the Kind Keeper Animal Rescue in Ferbruary and has since rescued ten dogs and six cats.
“I’ve been adopting them out within the first month of them being here,” said Mairowicz.
While she’d like to keep the momentum going, there’s still a lot of work to do.
“I still need fencing, crates and there’s still some electrical,” she said.
Lisa Garnish met Mairowicz while volunteering with another animal rescue group.
“I can understand her connection with dogs, because she works like one,” stated Garnish.
Mairowicz works full-time as a waitress on top of trying to run the shelter. It’s an exhausting and sometimes impossible task, but she is determined.
“I would really like to help stop euthanization,” she said.
Mairowicz hopes to educate people on the importance of spaying and neutering, and encourage more people to adopt.
“There are tons of people out there that just need to open their hearts and open their homes,” explained Mairowicz.
As a no-kill shelter, Kind Keeper risks becoming overcrowded. Mairowicz plans to set a maximum capacity of 20 dogs and 30 cats.
Kind Keeper is starting to offer affordable grooming to help pay for some operational costs.
Kind Keeper is a certified non-profit. The property is zoned for commercial use, according to Horry County.
