NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A sewer line break Thursday night on 21st Avenue South has resulted in a no swim advisory for the area.

North Myrtle Beach Spokesperson Pat Dowling says the line broke and a couple hundred gallons of sewage entered the storm water drain at 21st Avenue South before workers stopped the flow.

“Fortunately, 21st Avenue South is also the location of a completed Ocean Outfall system, so the sewage did not enter the ocean swim zone there but was dispersed through the underground storm water pipe about a quarter-mile offshore,” Dowling said.

As required by the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, the ocean access at 21st Avenue South has been classified a no swim zone 500 feet on either side until crews can test the water in the area Friday morning.

Dowling says people are not advised to swim at the location until test results prove it is safe to do so.
