North Myrtle Beach police are teaching women how to protect themselves from sexual assault.

The North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department began its Rape Aggression Defense course on Saturday, at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center.

The program consists of four classes spread throughout the month of April. Each class is three hours long.

The women’s only course is free, and open to anyone over the age of 13. However, minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Officers teach the women how to avoid being attacked, and how to use their bodies to defend themselves.

“We want to give people the confidence, and women the confidence to know that, I’m not going to be the victim. I’m empowered. I have the right to defend myself, and I’m going to do so. I’m not going to be that easy target,” said LCPL. William McLeod with North Myrtle Beach Public Safety.

The program is not currently accepting anymore participants since you must pre-register. North Myrtle Beach Public Safety does plan to hold more R.A.D. courses in the summer and fall.
