A North Myrtle Beach man has been sentenced to 15 years in a 2017 Conway deadly shooting case.

On Tuesday, Richard A. Whidby, 21, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting, according to a press release from Horry County Government. A Circuit Court judge sentenced him to serve 15 years in prison.

Whidby was charged with murder in the June 2017 shooting death of Darryl Hunte, 48, of Conway, the release also said. Hunte died after being shot in a drive-by shooting at his home on Beau Street in the Conway area.

“This was an extremely tragic event that could have been avoided; but again in our community, another young person resorted to violence with a gun when he senselessly shot multiple rounds into a family’s home without any regard for the lives of those inside,” said Joshua Holford, the senior assistant solicitor who prosecuted the case for the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. “As a result of one of those shots, an innocent man—not engaged in any wrongdoing whatsoever—who was loved by his wife, children, family, and friends, lost his life.”

Whidby was arrested by North Myrtle Beach police in June 2016 for allegedly setting a fire inside a Walmart on Highway 17.
