NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (WBTW) – North Myrtle Beach city leaders say as the city grows, there’s not enough room for people to park.
City leaders met Friday to look at where they should put a new parking lot for downtown businesses.
City Spokesperson Pat Dowling says it will be near Main Street, and businesses would have to pay a fee for them to be able to use it for their customers.
At Friday’s workshop, city leaders agreed businesses wanting to use the spaces would have to pay the city $25,000 per space.
That will have to get approval in the next city council meeting, but Dowling says that’s similar to what businesses would have to pay to get their own parking spaces.
“What we’re trying to do is give Main Street a future in terms of redevelopment and expansion of businesses there or new businesses coming in,” said Dowling.
Friday, city leaders said without this plan, businesses looking to open in North Myrtle Beach may not have that opportunity, with already limited parking. That’s why they’re calling it an “investment for the future”.
“It just frees up some creativity and innovation for those who are doing business on Main Street and those who want to come in and do business,” said Dowling.
Dowling says the parking option will not be a requirement for Main Street businesses, but an option for those who cannot find their own land to create the parking spaces required by the city..
