NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW)- If you see North Myrtle Beach City Manager Mike Mahaney or Public Safety Director Jay Fernandez anytime in the next few weeks, you may not recognize them.
“They decided we would go two toned, orange for Clemson and the teal for Coastal Carolina,” said Mahaney.
Monday, the two received new hair “do’s” thanks to a bet made with Lt. Dana Griffin on how much money the department could make for the South Carolina Special Olympics.
“I said Director, this is really the first year and I think 25,000 is probably a lofty goal and he goes well what do you think you can raise, and I said I think maybe ten,” said Griffin.
The department met that goal, and much more, raising more than $38,000.
“They’re telling us this is the largest amount of money we’ve raised, Krispy Kreme has in partnership with local law enforcement for special Olympics. So, we’re number one in the country,” said Fernandez.
Although getting a good laugh at their bosses was strong motivation, Griffin says that’s not why they raised the money.
“Just hearing those kids, you know, they’re the ones that are amazing, they’re the ones that are actually getting out there and doing the work, and actually being the athletes, but, you know, just how excited they are that we’re champions for them, it really is amazing,” said Griffin.
Griffin says all of the money raised will stay local to benefit our local Special Olympics teams.
It goes to help families with traveling expenses to and from the games and for new equipment for the players.
