The City of North Myrtle Beach has applied for a new permit for additional dune restoration along the city’s beach front.
The city released that information in a press release Sunday. Officials say they hope to restore the dune system in three locations, between 41st Avenue South and 45th Avenue South, between 37th Avenue North and 42nd Avenue North, and between 61st Avenue North and 63rd Avenue North.
That permit will have to be approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM).
This is not the first dune restoration project the city has undertaken recently. According to a press release, the city is nearing completion of the projects at 45th Avenue South to 48th Avenue South and from 42nd Avenue North to 55th Avenue North.
According to the city, the sand being used in the current project and the proposed project come from the same source and has already been deemed compatible with the existing beach sand. That sand is in the dredging spoils basin on Little River Neck Road and came from the Cherry Grove dredging project.
The city says it must use all the sand in that basin and wishes to use the remaining sand for more dune restoration.
The city advises that there may be some intermittent closures of some sections of beach during the work. Trucks will carry the sand from the basin to the beach where off-road vehicles and bulldozers will shape the dunes.
The goal of the restoration is to protect against storm surge.
