NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – North Charleston is launching a new effort to reward young people for doing the right thing.
The North Charleston Police Department is beginning a “positive ticketing” campaign similar to others across the country and in Canada.
Beginning Wednesday, police officers in three neighborhoods will begin issuing so-called positive tickets when they see youngsters doing the right thing such as picking up litter, helping out at community events or wearing helmets while riding bicycles.
The youngsters will be able to exchange the tickets for prizes such as vouchers for admission to water parks or meals at restaurants that are participating in the program.
The city is working with the nonprofit group Metanoia on the positive ticketing effort.
