MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (AP) – The weekly summer fireworks displays at Murrells Inlet have been canceled.
The eight-minute free shows each Monday during the summer attracted hundreds of viewers to the boardwalk along the marsh. They were sponsored by local restaurants. But some civic groups complained about litter, noise and the potential for environmental damage.
Area media outlets report the Marshwalk restaurants announced Wednesday that they will not be staging the shows this summer.
A spokesman for the group said the decision was not based on pressure from outside groups or the threat of lawsuits but simply that it was the best thing for the community.
The restaurant group says the decision will also allow time to research any potential damage to the marsh from the fireworks debris.
