GREENVILLE, NC- At the age of ten one local basketball player is already getting letters from college programs. The rising fifth-grader plays for her high school sister’s travel team.
On just about any day of the week, you can find 10-year-old Zamareya Jones at the ‘Dungeon’.
“Every single day, seven days a week,” Jones’ trainer Keith McLawhorn said.
That’s exactly why she’s special, because for Jones, off days don’t exist.
Jones’ dad Marvin Jones said, “Her work ethic is crazy.”
Another one of Jones’ trainers said, “Zamareya’s determination and will to be the best is what sets her apart from the average 10-year-old.”
“Everything that I lacked as a kid she has it,” Marvin Jones said.
“You can be a kid all you want but in here, you got to act like, if I’m 10 I got to act like I’m 14 in the gym, I got to put in work,” Zamareya Jones said.
At just 10 years old Jones already has looks from college coaches. She plays on her 17-year-old sister’s travel team.
“She thinks she can beat me…but um…no,” Jones’ sister Tashada Joseph said.
It’s not just all about ball, Jones uses her competitive spirit in other areas.
“It can go towards my education. Like I get A’s and B’s every year no C’s. If I got a C I’m getting mad at myself and just keep studying.” Jones said. “I don’t like C’s.”
And the whole family sees the big picture. Jones’ dad says she’s playing for a free education.
Jones wants to play at the division one level and hopefully, go onto to the WNBA.
Jones was also selected to be featured in the 2016 edition of “the best players of AU.” A league a number of young athletes play in.
