Horry County School District officials say the confusion stemming from a Conway Police report on the arrest of a district teacher is a misunderstanding.
Conway police charged 23-year-old Erin Condon, a teacher at Whittemore Park Middle School, for possession of a controlled substance.
The arrest came after authorities say they found messages on a school-issued iPad about taking and buying drugs.
According to the police report obtained by News 13, officers also planned to arrest Condon for not returning all district owned iPads.
However, the report states police were told not to arrest Condon because of a possible agreement between lawyers for the school district and Condon’s attorney.
Horry County school officials say there was no deal made between Condon and the District.
“We don’t want to accuse any current or previous employee of having possession of something, or theft when that may not be the case. It’s our responsibility first to verify that it is not still on our property,” said Teal Britton.
Britton is the spokesperson for Horry County Schools.
She says Condon immediately resigned the day of her arrest.
She was allowed to return to the Whittemore Park Middle School campus to return any district owned items as well as collect her own.
Britton says at this point the district is going over its inventory to confirm all items are accounted for.
However this does not mean action against Condon could not happen.
“It’s determined that it was documented and issues to her and is not returned then we move forward either ask for the replacement of the device, payment for the device or if the conditions warrant then the charges for the device,” said Britton.
