FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) – Last week we told you about a threat made toward South Florence High School ahead of the start of class this week.
A program the school started last year aims to improve security.
Last school year, South Florence High School officials learned the identi-kid program during the pilot study. This year they want to continue that programs visitor requirements to ensure the safety of students and faculty members.
When you walk into South Florence High School this school year, you need to have your ID ready and prepare to be photographed.
Visitor manager, Gloria McFadden said many parents are familiar with the pilot program from last year and like the new safety precaution.
“We’re just keeping account of who has been in the building,” explained McFadden.
“The way, you know, things are going now in the world so you can’t have enough safety. I appreciate that we are doing this because I am the first person they see when they come in.”
Parents and students expressed concern about how the school campus is monitored. Principal Carol Hill said safety is the main priority.
Hill said, “the concern was the students have ID. What about the adults in the building. What safety checks do you have for who is in the building?”
The school now scans visitors’ ID for a background check and takes a picture for the visitors pass. Principal Hill said programs like this show how serious the school and district take student safety.
“We’re keeping kids safe and learning. These days as educational leaders, absolutely the learning is number one and absolutely the safety is number one,” Said Hill
