Many teenagers look forward to getting their driver’s license and many parents worry about their children’s safety.

“It’s a major step as a parent you know anytime you get your child behind the wheel it makes you nervous,” said Dr. Williams, whose 15-year-old son was taking his driving test on Sunday at “Safe Driving School.”

Michael Doneff, the owner of “Safe Driving School,” wants to make sure the dozens of students that come through his driving school stay safe on the roads. And with more than 30 years in experience, part of his success is due to transparency with parents.

“We want to talk to the parents after the test to tell that parent what they need to work on, what they did well, we’re very positive as well what they did well but there are a lot of things they need to work on before they’re able to really get out there,” said Doneff.

At some point though, teen drivers like everyone else will drive on their own. But new technology now offers parents a way to keep an eye on their children.

There are several companies out there that provide the relatively new technology but Yoav Megged, a Deputy CEO of Traffilog, said their product aims to prevent before something happens.

“When they have a problem with the vehicle, the vehicle got stuck in the middle of the highway they can get an alert saying the exact location and what happened to the vehicle,” said Megged.

The “Traffilog” device not only gives warnings about mechanical issues but it also analyses the driver’s behaviors and sends alerts to an app with the trends so parents have the ability to check on their children.

And in an emergency situation, the technology also alerts first responders.

“Any device that can help to provide assistance, emergency assistance, monitoring activity from a parents standpoint is ideal,” said Dr. Williams.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety preliminary statistics for 2014 show 87 teen drivers between 15 and 19 years old were killed in car crashes in the state.
