The South Carolina House Ways and Means Committee voted Wednesday evening to kill the plan to close South Carolina State University because of its financial problems. It passed a new plan instead that would keep the school open but fire its board of trustees and president.
The state would run the school until it’s on sound financial footing again. SC State is expected to have a deficit of $17 million by the end of June. Most of that is owed to vendors.
The plan now goes to the full House for a vote. If it passes there it will go to the Senate.
