HILLSBOROUGH, N.C.  — An Orange County sex offender was arrested Monday after authorities say he was trying to set up the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s significant other.

Brian Travis Padnos Allen, 24, of Mebane, who is registered as a sex offender with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, was nabbed during an undercover operation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in an email. Sheriff Charles Blackwood told CBS North Carolina that investigators communicated with Allen on and off for about five weeks.

“Information was received that Mr. Allen was attempting to contract a murder. The intended victim was to be the significant other of a former girlfriend,” officials said.

Allen, who is a lifetime registered sex offender under North Carolina laws, was charged with solicitation to commit murder, officials said.

Allen was taken into custody on Monday at a Petro-Mart in Efland after exchanging money with investigators, according to Sheriff Blackwood.  He was placed in Orange County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond, according to officials.

Allen is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday.CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the intended victim. WNCN regrets the error.
