New grant opens door to clean-up and new events in downtown Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors awarded the Five Points Business Association the Better Block Grant in the amount of $16,500.

The association’s president says the money will be used to spruce up Nance Plaza and host the inaugural Plaza City Market.

“It’s going to be a big revitalization effort. There will be vendors, stage entertainment, a beer and wine garden. The point is to show people that the Five Points District, Historic Downtown Myrtle Beach can be awesome,” John Krajc said.

The event also includes live entertainment by Carolina County Music Festival performer Maddie Hunt, Special Blend, the Coastal Carolina University Gospel Choir, North Myrtle Beach School Band & Choir and more. Efforts businesses in the downtown area say they appreciate.

“This is a part of town that anyone who’s been here for any amount of time is actually very familiar with. But they’ve just never embraced it,” Thomas Pardue of TomTom Studio and Gallerie said.

The event will be taking place Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 9 am-4 pm. Located on 9th Avenue North and Nance Plaza in the Five Points District. It’s something Pardue says hopes is only the beginning of what’s to come.

“Without something behind it pushing it forward again, it goes right back to what it was. That’s what I would absolutely hate to see.”

The Five Points Business Association is looking for volunteers to help with landscaping and planting flowers next week as they work to get the plaza ready for the event.
