CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Some people who live in Horry County could soon pay lower homeowners insurance thanks to a new fire station being built.

On Thursday there was a ground breaking for Station 23 which will go up near the McDonald’s on highway 544. It’s scheduled to be up and running by October of next year.

The new station is replacing the current Station 23 that is on Victory Lane on the Horry Georgetown Technical College campus.

Last year, Horry County approved selling the property to the school. The new station will be larger with thee bays as opposed to the current two.

It’s also more centrally located than the current one, so a lot people along 544 will see their insurance rates go down because it will put them within a 5 mile driving radius of a fire house which lowers their ISO rating.

The new station will not only bring insurance rates down, but response times as well, because of traffic patterns at the current location.

“Years ago when it was built, Horry Georgetown Tech and CCU were not as populated as it is now… So we are running into a lot of traffic issues and it’s probably not the safest location for that,” said Horry County spokesperson Lisa Bourcier.

The $1 million price tag for building the new Station 23 has already been budgeted, so the project will not impact anyone’s tax rates.

The groundbreaking was at 10:00 am Thursday Morning.
