FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A 15-year-old has been changed with first-degree murder after authorities said he killed his grandfather late Monday with a hatchet.
Deputies were called to a home on Elgin Road around midnight.
Upon arrival, deputies found 63-year-old Joseph Naulty dead after being struck with a hatchet.
Nautly’s 15-year-old grandson was taken to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
“I don’t remember in 25 years working here in the Sheriff’s Office someone being killed with a hatchet. Things are unexplainable now,” said Sean Swain.
Youth Services Detectives charged him with first-degree murder on a juvenile petition, authorities said.
The teen was taken to the juvenile detention center where he will be held until a scheduled Aug. 11 court appearance.
“For the most part they kept to themselves,” said neighor Amir Moulana. “It’s shocking to wake up one morning and know that someone whose been in your home has killed their grandfather.”
CBS North Carolina will update this story as more information becomes available.
