FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Additional charges have been filed against a former Cumberland County teacher who was charged with having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student in February.
Following an investigation, Laura Garrigus, 30, was arrested and charged Feb. 8 after a 17-year-old female student said she had been having a physical relationship with the Cumberland International Early College teacher since Oct. 2015.
She was originally charged with four counts taking indecent liberties with a student and two counts sexual offense with a student.
During the original investigation, a second sexual assault victim was found. The new investigation revealed that between October 2015 and December 2015, Garrigus had an inappropriate relationship with a second early college program student. The investigation alleges that on seven separate occasions, Garrigus met the juvenile for the purpose of sex.
Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives served arrest warrants on Garrigus on March 3 for 13 new charges.
Garrigus faces seven felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a student by a teacher and six felony counts of sexual activity with a student by a teacher.
She is now being held under a $325,000 secured bond.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for Friday at 2:30.
