BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – A man was shot in a home on West Main Street in Bennettsville around 10:30 on Saturday morning, according to Captain Greg Williams with the Bennettsville Police Department.
Detectives with the Bennettsville police department say they are searching for the suspect, 28-year old, Haneef Aquil Childs for the murder of Jackie Purvis of Bennettsville.
Jackie Purvis’ sister talked with News13 about her family’s loss. Almeta McRay said, “I don’t know why they killed my poor brother, he was the baby of us all. I just can’t believe it, I just can’t believe Jackie’s gone.”
A Bennetsville police officer spotted Childs in a blue Ford van and when the officer attempted to pull him over, Childs led officers on a high speed chase. The chase began in the city of Bennettsville and went through Scotland County where Scotland County Sheriff’s officers and Laurinburg Police Department joined in the pursuit. Child’s van was stopped by sticks put out by North Carolina officers. Childs attempted to run from officers once stopped but was caught and taken into custody by North Carolina Law Enforcement and being held in North Carolina jail waiting to be brought back to South Carolina to face a murder charge.
Bennettsville police say no one was hurt during the pursuit.
Bennettsville detectives say they are still working to determine the details of what happened in the shooting.
