HENDERSONVILLE, NC — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman Friday at an Ingles after a concerned shopper saw a child left in a car out in the parking lot.
Officers received the call around 4:45 p.m. and arrived to find a two year old in a vehicle with the windows partially opened, with the outside temperature reaching 91 degrees.
The mother of the child in the vehicle, Orfilia Sanchez Diaz, 33 was arrested by officers when she returned. Diaz told the officers her child had just fallen asleep when they got to the store and thought she could go into the store, shop for groceries quickly, while leaving the child in the car.
According to the report, interviews and other investigative efforts determined Diaz had been in the store around 42 minutes.
The child was taken to Park Ridge Memorial Hospital as a precaution, and is expected to make a full recovery. Once the child recovers, they will be in custody of the Transylvania County DSS.
Diaz has been charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse and is being held at the Henderson County Detention Facility under a $2,500 bond.
