Authorities report that a woman died and 5 more people were hurt when a church van and a truck collided in Horry County on Tuesday afternoon.
Also, about 90 minutes after the crash, a small child at the scene was hurt when the child was run over by an off-road vehicle, officials said.
The initial wreck happened at 4 pm on SC 9 Bypass just north of Loris, the SC Highway Patrol said. SC 9 Bypass lanes heading toward the beach at the scene were shut down for at least 2 hours.
On Tuesday evening, officials said that a passenger in the church van, Rebecca Lynn Dew, age 29, of Whiteville, NC, died from injuries sustained in the collision.
Dew leaves behind three young sons, according to her Facebook profile. Dew was a 2006 graduate Southeastern Community College and of Whiteville High School, her profile said.
The crash happened at SC Highway 747, which intersects the SC 9 Bypass about 2000 feet east of the US 701 intersection.
The wreck happened as the 1996 Ford van, in which Dew and 2 others were passengers in, was being driven east on SC 747, said Lance Corporal Judd Jones of the SC Highway Patrol.
A 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck with 3 total occupants was traveling north on SC 9 Bypass.
The Ford van “went through a stop sign and was struck by the pickup truck,” Jones said. The church van then flipped.
Jones said that Dew was not wearing her seatbelt.
Jones said that 5 other people involved in the crash were taken to Grand Strand Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At 5:30 pm, a child who was at the scene as a bystander was hit and run over by a John Deere “Gator”-type off-road vehicle, Van Aernem said.
An additional ambulance was dispatched to take the child to a hospital, Brian Van Aernem said.
