CARY, N.C. (AP) – Police have arrested a Cary man after his neighbors reported he used a sword to stab his dog to death.

The News & Observer reports 47-year-old Douglas Joseph Hagler was arrested Sunday afternoon and released after posting bond after stabbing his 13-month-old Husky that morning, according to a Wake County jail spokesman.

Town spokeswoman Susan Moran says the dog died lashed to the tree where he was stabbed.

Authorities say they received a call from someone who said Hagler was wielding a 36-inch long sword with a white, studded handle repeatedly saying “that dog’s a killer.”

Hagler was charged with one count of animal cruelty. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.
