FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A newborn and a 2 year old were kidnapped when they were left alone in a running car that was stolen from outside a Pizza Hut in Fayetteville on Tuesday afternoon, according to police and a 911 call.

The incident — which included a chase to capture the suspect and get the children back — happened around 1:06 p.m. at the Pizza Hut located at 3069 Boone Trail Extension, police said.

Don Stevenson Wallace, 41, of the 5100 block of Cypress Road in Fayetteville is facing several charges in connection with the incident, including 2 counts of first-degree kidnapping.

“The thief took the car when… a vehicle was left running, with two small children inside of it, in the parking lot of the Pizza Hut while the mother went inside of the business,” Fayetteville Police said in a statement to the media.Police released a 911 call made by the mother — Click here to listen to the call

When the mother returned, she saw that her gold Saturn sedan was no longer parked where she left it, according to police and a 911 call.

Responding officers found the vehicle and tried to stop the driver, police said. However, the suspect driving the vehicle refused to stop, and a short chase occurred, according to police.

After turning onto a dead end road at Briar Creek Place, the pursuit ended and the suspect was taken into custody and the children were not injured, according to police.

“It was extremely frightening,” said Joan Poole, who watched from her window as the chase ended in her backyard.

Poole showed CBS North Carolina the tire marks from where the car went through her property, narrowly missing two houses.

Wallce is also charged with breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two (2) counts damage to property, felony flee to elude, driving while license is revoked, reckless driving to endanger persons or property, and speeding.
