RALEGH, N.C. (AP) – State health officials say the first case of the Zika virus infection has been reported in North Carolina in a person who had traveled to a country where an outbreak of the virus is ongoing.
Officials with the Department of Health and Human Services say the case was confirmed in an adult who has recovered.
No cases of the disease are known to have been acquired in North Carolina or elsewhere in the continental United States except for one infection in Texas attributed to sexual transmission. The virus is typically spread by mosquito bites.
Many people infected with the Zika virus don’t get sick. For those who do, it is usually a mild illness with symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.
