Lowe’s to close 51 stores in US, Canada

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA/WBTW) – Home improvement giant Lowe’s says it will close 51 underperforming stores across the U.S. and Canada.

Lowe’s made the announcement Monday morning saying the closures are part of the company’s strategic reassessment.

Lowe’s says it plans to focus on its more profitable stores and improve the overall health of its store portfolio.

Twenty underperforming stores in the U.S. will close. Most associates at these stores will be given the opportunity to work in a similar role at another Lowe’s store.

“We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe’s stores,” said said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO.

The majority of stores that will close are located within 10 miles of another Lowe’s store.

Lowe’s expects to close the impacted stores by Feb. 1, 2019. Lowe’s plans on having store closing sales for most of the impacted locations, with the exception of select stores in the U.S., which will close immediately.
