GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) – – The lottery for the opportunity to see synchronized fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is now open.
The annual spectacle attracts thousands for a chance to see the synchronous fireflies during a two week period.
Shuttle service to the viewing area will be provided on Thursday, May 30, through Thursday, June 6. Anyone wanting to take part needs a parking pass that is distributed through the lottery system.
The lottery will be open for applications from Friday, April 26, at 8 a.m. until Monday, April 29, at 8 p.m. Results will be announced on May 10.
Synchronous fireflies: Great Smoky Mountains National Park announces dates for viewing
A total of 1,800 vehicle passes will be handed out. The fee to enter the lottery is $1 and successful applicants will automatically be charged a $24 reservation fee, which covers the cost of awarding the passes, event supplies, one red-light flashlight per pass, and nightly personnel costs.
