Lawmakers across the country have reacted to President Donald Trump’s “State of the Union” address.
Among other things, the president called on congress to pay for a border wall and end what he calls “partisan” investigations into his administration.
News13 Washington Correspondent Mark Meredith looked in to what lawmakers are saying about the address.
President Trump said his State of the Union was all about unity.
But one day after the speech, it is hard to find any new signs of cooperation on Capitol Hill.
“it was not a good speech. The president’s hurting,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- Minority Leader).
“The best thing that can be said about the president’s speech is that it’s over,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D- NY).
House Democrats said the speech did nothing to bridge the gap between parties.
In his address, the president once again urged congress to build a border wall.
But, lawmakers say a deal on the wall remains out of reach.
The president will visit the border next week with a campaign rally in El Paso, Texas.
The White House said it’s still considering declaring an emergency on the border, ordering the military to build the wall, even if congress disapproves.
In his address, the president also urged congress to stop its investigation into interference in the 2016 election.
“if there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation,” President Trump said.
Democrats say they have no plans to give up their oversight authority, and will allow the investigation to continue.
