RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The family of an Apex man hurt in last month’s shooting at UNC-Charlotte is asking for support as he continues to recover.

Drew Pescaro, 19, was one of four wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom on the UNCC campus on April 30.

“He’s probably one of the strongest people we all know, but we ask for continued prayer,” said Drew’s older brother Ross Pescaro.

Pescaro said the news of the shooting didn’t feel real at first.

Drew has needed several surgeries after being shot. Ross started the #DrewStrong to drum up support for his little brother during his recovery.

“That was the craziest thing. I started that the first night on social media and it blew up to be trending worldwide for the first few hours,” said Ross.

Ross said seeing the outpouring of love for his brother on social media has been overwhelming.

“It’s insane. He has such an impact. You can tell all the impact he’s made in everyone’s lives,” he said.

On Thursday night, Ross — along with family, friends, and coworkers — gathered at Raleigh Brewing Company for “Brews for Drew.”

“Even though this occurred in Charlotte, you don’t realize that it can affect you here in Raleigh. Then you find out it’s a friend or coworker or customer, that it’s someone from Raleigh, then I think it hits you even harder,” said Sean Callihan. He helped organize the fundraiser with Alison Casey.

Casey has known Drew’s mom for a decade. She was heartbroken to hear about last month’s shooting.

Two students, Riley Howell, 21, and Ellis Parlier, 19, were killed.

“I was absolutely devastated. I was in cold chills. I was at work. I couldn’t believe that I knew somebody who had a child who went through this horrific incident,” Casey said.

Drew has been using social media to document his recovery.

On Wednesday, Drew tweeted that he’d been released from the hospital in Charlotte, but was re-hospitalized locally to fight an infection.

Ross said his family wants to thank everyone for their support, as Drew continues to recuperate.
