National Hurricane Center director visiting Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – The director of the National Hurricane Center is visiting Myrtle Beach as part this year’s national Hurricane Awareness Tour.

Government hurricane experts are visiting five cities on the East Coast and one in Canada to discuss preparation for the Atlantic hurricane season that begins on June 1.

National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb and other center forecasters visit Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, arriving on one of the hurricane hunter aircraft that fly into storms to collect data to put into models to better predict hurricane strength and direction.

Representatives from local emergency management offices, the American Red Cross and forecasters from the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, North Carolina, are also participating.
