COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The South Carolina NAACP plans a rally at the Statehouse to show the civil rights organization’s support for South Carolina State University.

The noon Monday rally was planned three days ago, and comes less than a week after a House panel first passed a proposal to temporarily close the state’s only public historically black university for a massive overhaul, then reopen it in 2017.

The proposal likely won’t get much further. Senators have shown little support for the idea.

Monday’s rally is the latest show of support for SC State. Trustees and alumni are still backing embattled President Thomas Elzey.

Elzey was hired 20 months ago to turn SC State around. But some House members don’t think Elzey has an adequate plan to pay down over $10 million in debt.
