MYRTLE BEACH (WBTW) — The effort to preserve an old nightclub in Myrtle Beach is on the list of dozens of finalists to receive a grant from the Knight Foundation.

Charlie’s Place was a performance hall open in the 1950’s and 60’s along Carver Street, once considered the hub of African-American-owned businesses in Myrtle Beach. About a year ago, the effort to restore it–and turn it into a produce market for local growers and neighbors to do business–began.

Now, it’s one of 158 finalists nationwide (from more than 4,500 applicants) as part of the Knight Cities Challenge. The winners–announced in the spring–will divide $5 million in grant money.

The Knight Foundation seeks to enrich and improve the 26 cities where the Knight family used to own and operate newspapers. This is the second year of a three-year effort for the Knight Cities Challenge.
