A Myrtle Beach teenager organized a volleyball tournament to help a friend with heart disease pay for his medical bills.

19-year-old Ethan Atkinson is a student at Horry Georgetown Technical College. He held his third annual Beach Volleyball Tournament on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk on Saturday. In the past, Atkinson’s donated the proceeds to ALS research, in honor of his uncle who has ALS. However, this year, Atkinson will donate the proceeds to 23-year-old John Kent. Kent, who is from Florence, was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy when he was 14 years old, and recently underwent a heart valve replacement. Kent also has a passion for volleyball. “I really want to help John out and what better, fun way could I do it than having a tournament, have all of his friends come down,” said Atkinson. “I think this is the best way to do it.”
