MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- It’s been nearly two weeks since Hurricane Matthew hit our area but the impacts are still felt countywide.
That includes the Myrtle Beach State Park which remains closed due to damage. Park Managers say when they tried to do the initial assessment they couldn’t get through the park with cars or an ATV.
More than 180 trees fell down or snapped during the hurricane and the park was without power for days.
“It always starts out kind of slow, first we had to make sure that everyone that came in here was safe. We didn’t have power for a few days so it was a slow process,” Park Manager Jerry Ives said.
In addition to the downed trees, there was some structural damage and a portion of the pier has to be closed until further repairs can be made.
“Looking at what happened at Springmaid and Surfside and other piers in other locations, it’s a miracle we are where we are,” Ives said.
The Myrtle Beach State Park will open the day use area, beach front and [art of the pier Saturday. Park officials hope to open the campground and cabins Monday.
