MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Next time a Myrtle Beach Police officer drives past you with their lights on, you won’t just be hearing or seeing their car, you’ll also be feeling it.
The department has added howler sirens to its fleet. The new devices emit short bursts of low-frequency sound that will vibrate nearby cars.“Motorists have a lot of distractions inside the vehicle, like cell phones and navigation systems,” said Myrtle Beach Police Department Lt. Joey Crosby. “This is just another tool for us to utilize to grab the motorists attention to yield the right away for emergency vehicles, so we can get to that call for emergency service.”So far, only new cars have the siren, but Lt. Crosby said they will be phased in over time so all cars will be equipped.
