MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Horry County officials are holding the first of three meetings to let the public and businesses know about safety plans for Atlantic Beach Bikefest next month.
The first meeting is being held on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach followed by two more next Tuesday.
Last year, three people were killed and seven wounded in violence during the Memorial Day weekend on the Grand Strand. Officials have developed a safety plan and this year a 23-mile, one-way traffic loop will help control traffic at night during the weekend.
Tens of thousands come to the beach not only for Bikefest, but for Military Appreciation Days and the traditional start of summer.
A $50,000 social media campaign is underway urging visitors to respect the community and obey the law.
