MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach City Council voted down an ordinance Tuesday prohibiting fishing with chum or throwing fish parts from local piers.

The ordinance would have amended part of the City of Myrtle Beach’s regulations on recreational fishing from piers. As the ordinance read, pier management would have been required to have waste receptacles for fish remains and signage informing customers that dumping anything off the pier was banned.

City council initially proposed amending the regulations following several shark attacks on neighboring North and South Carolina beaches.

Myrtle Beach City Spokesman Mark Kruea told News13 individual pier regulations factored into Tuesday’s vote. He says several piers within the City of Myrtle Beach already have regulations on chumming established.

Kruea says some city council members also raised concern over the smell of fish parts in receptacles.
