The City of Myrtle Beach invited community members to celebrate black history, and the achievements of those who have paved the way in Myrtle Beach.
The city’s Neighborhood Services department held a Harlem Renaissance-themed black history gala on Saturday night. Dozens of people gathered at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center for the celebration. They commemorated the 11th anniversary of the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center. In honor of the late Mary C. Canty, organizers also recognized unsung heroes who have served the community. Canty’s daughter, Neighborhood Services director Cookie Goings, said her mother left a list of “heroes” she wished to be honored, before her passing in 2015. “We have a responsibility to teach the children, but also to let them recognize, it’s the everyday people who are right here in the city of Myrtle Beach, in their neighborhoods, in their churches, in their classroom, who are the true heroes,” Goings said.
