MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation will meet Wednesday to discuss recommended upgrades to an area near downtown.
The South Carolina Urban Land Institute (ULI) met with the Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation (DRC) in November of 2014 to recommend upgrades to the South Mixed Use Area near downtown. The DRC says the 75-acre area is declining.
It stretches from 1st Avenue North to 7th Avenue North, west of Kings Highway to the Atlantic Ocean. It’s an area with many older motels and a few single family homes. The goal of the study is to not only find ways to re-develop the stretch of land but look at how it could impact neighboring areas.
Some of the suggestions included the development of a concert venue or amphitheater at the former Pavilion site, extension of the entertainment district (restaurants / music venues) to create a live / play environment, market rate multi-family apartments and other housing options to encourage year-round occupancy and enhancement of family-oriented hospitality district centered on existing amusement park.
Those are all merely suggestions at this point but those with the Downtown Redevelopment Corporation hope the community will be open to the possible changes.
“I think that some of the ideas that they have come up with and they’re recommendations. They’re not ideas that are actually going to happen but they’re recommendations and I think people need to hear those things. It’s been such a blank piece of land, there’s just been some things that have been the same for so such a long time,” DRC Executive Director Lauren Clever said.
The ULI TAP Final Report Presentation is Wednesday at 4pm at Train Depot on 851 Broadway Street. Count on News13 to keep you covered.
