A Myrtle Beach business owner was arrested for unpaid taxes.

A press release says Joaquim “Jack” Morais was arrested on Thursday by South Carolina Department of Revenue agents on seven counts of failing to collect, account for, or pay withholding tax.

He was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center around 8 a.m. on Thursday and released around 1:45 p.m. on $3,500 bond, according to booking records.

The release also says if he is convicted, Morais faces fines of up to $10,000 and/or up to five years in prison per count.

Morais is the owner and operator of Titan Construction Services, Inc. and Titan Enterprises, LLC in Myrtle Beach, according to the release. Morais was responsible for filing withholding tax returns and making payments for taxes withheld from employee paychecks. For tax years 2010-2012, 2014-2016, and the first quarter of the 2017 tax year, he did not file tax returns or make payments. In total, Morais failed to pay $95,767 in state taxes withheld from employee paychecks to the SCDOR.

“The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply,” the release also says.
