Myrtle Beach Boardwalk receives prestigious Governor’s Cup

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk has been awarded the prestigious Governor’s Cup at the 2015 Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Travel.

The winner of the annual Governor’s Cup sets the benchmark for the state’s tourism industry and highlights outstanding achievements in tourism marketing.

Initial construction of the 1.3-mile oceanfront boardwalk and promenade was completed in May 2010.  It was expanded in 2013 and now stretches pier-to-pier, from 15^th Avenue North to First Avenue, with three distinct sections.

In addition to the piers, the boardwalk district features accommodations, restaurants and the popular Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.

During the summer months and throughout the holidays, the boardwalk is home to festivals and events such as Hot Summer Nights, a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Halloween Fright Nights and Holidays on the Boardwalk.

“The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is the centerpiece of our tourism, and its positive effect on the city and the entire Grand Strand cannot be overstated,” said Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “In its first five years, the boardwalk has had a substantial impact on the entire downtown area, making it a go-to destination for both visitors to the Myrtle Beach area and local residents who want to be a part of the fun and excitement.”  

“Our beautiful city has been made all the more outstanding because of the addition of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk,” said Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes. “The downtown area is thriving, as the many great amenities found along the boardwalk attract more and more visitors. We are so thankful for this recognition, and share it with the many merchants, community leaders and other stakeholders who made this boardwalk a reality.”

“The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk will continue to be a must-see for all first-time and returning guests,” Dean added, “thanks to its combination of beautiful oceanfront views of the pristine beach line, affordable accommodations, delicious food and family-friendly attractions and events.”

Representatives from the City of Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Redevelopment Corporation, the Oceanfront Merchants Association and DDC Engineers were on hand to accept the award at the conference luncheon, which was held at the Embassy Suites at Kingston Plantation Resort.
