Myrtle Beach attorneys are weighing in on teacher- student interactions following an incident at Myrtle Beach High School, where a mother claims a science teacher pulled her son out of his chair causing him to slam his head into a wall.
Timothy Beck, a science teacher at Myrtle Beach High School is being charged with third-degree assault and battery, according to court records.
Handling child cases in Horry County for the last 10 years, personal injury attorney Amy Lawrence says she’s seen plenty of cases like this one.
“I don’t think he had any intention to hurt him, I think he had an intent to get him up out of his seat because he wasn’t listening but when you’re a teacher that opens up Pandora’s box, you’re open for criminal liability and civil liability.” Lawrence said.
Lawrence says its better for teachers to call in a school officer if a situation escalates, and for parents to attempt to work with the teacher head on before involving law enforcement.
“These students are becoming more combative, things are getting physical, kids are doing things we’ve never seen before.” Lawrence said.
