MURRELLS INLET, SC (WBTW) – The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies have arrested the man responsible for an armed bank robbery in Murrells Inlet Thursday afternoon.

Deputies responded to BB&T, located at 656 Sunnyside Avenue, just before noon Thursday. Lt. Neil Johnson says a black male entered the bank around 11:35 a.m., walked to the counter and demanded money from the teller.

Lt. Johnson says after the bank employee handed over the money, the robber ran to a four door gray sedan that was parked near a home on Murrells Inlet Road. Within six hours of the robbery occurring, Georgetown deputies made an arrest in the case.

Damon Antwon Brown, 31, of Murrells Inlet, was arrested just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Brown was transported to the Georgetown County Detention Center where he will formally be charged with armed robbery and await a bond hearing, cofirms Lt. Johnson.

Lt. Johnson reports that because of Brown’s photo being posted on social media by local news outlets, and many people sharing the story, tips began coming in on the suspect’s identity.

The bank was blocked off with crime scene tape and deputies spoke with people who live on Murrells Inlet Road and canvassed the area with bloodhounds.

The robber was described as a black man around 28 to 35-years-old, clean shaven, with a stocky build possibly weighing 225 to 275 pounds. A surveillance camera photo of the robber was released by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office in hopes of someone recognizing the man.

Bloodhounds at the bank tracked the Brown’s scent from the building to the area where the car was reportedly waiting, which corroborates the witness’ story, says Lt. Johnson.
