MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The murder charges against Tammy and Sidney Moorer in the disappearance of Heather Elvis have been dropped, according to the Horry County Public Index.

The Horry County Index states that several charges previously filed against Tammy Moorer were dismissed as of Thursday afternoon. The specific charges that have been dismissed are murder, two counts of indecent exposure, and obstruction of justice.

In addition, charges previously filed against Sidney Moorer in connection with the disappearance and presumed death of Heather Elvis have also been dropped, according to the Horry County Index. The charges against Sidney Moorer that have been dropped are murder and two counts of indecent exposure.

News13 contacted Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson for an explanation of why charges against the Moorers have been dropped, but he could not comment yet on the developments in the case.

Attorney for Tammy Moorer, Greg McCollum, says charges against his client were dropped by the solicitor’s office based on the office’s own case. McCollum could not comment on the specifics of the case due to a gag order placed over the case that has not yet been lifted, but he did add that Tammy Moorer is relieved to have the murder charge dismissed.

“She would react like anybody would. She’s relieved. She’s still concerned about the serious charges that are remaining, but certainly it’s a relief to have murder charges against you dropped,” says McCollum.

Debbi Elvis, mother of missing woman Heather Elvis, says the family is not ready to speak publicly on murder charges against the Moorers being dropped as they are still receiving information from the solicitor’s office. She did say, however, that the family remains focused on Heather’s case and finding their daughter.

Friends, family and community members have continued to support the Elvis family throughout numerous searches, court hearings and anniversaries of Heather’s disappearance, documenting many of those events on the FindHeatherElvis Facebook page. Thursday was no different as news of the charges against the Moorers being dropped spread across the community.

Heather Elvis was last heard from the morning of December 18, 2013. Her car was found abandoned at Peachtree Landing in Socastee, just outside of Myrtle Beach, the next day.

Investigators revealed that Elvis had a previous relationship with Sidney Moorer. Sidney and Tammy Moorer were officially charged with Elvis’ murder February 24, 2014. The Moorers spent 11 months in jail until a judge granted them each a $100,000 bond in January 2015.

Months later, in September 2015, the judge modified the Moorers’ bond to allow the couple to move to Florida for work.
