MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – County officials say a man from Lancaster died days after a crash near the entrance of Myrtle Beach State Park.
Cpl. Sonny Collins with the SC Highway Patrol says the crash involved a pickup truck and two motorcycles Saturday on Highway 17 Business around 2:50 p.m.
South Carolina Highway Patrol says the truck was driving south and tried to turn left into a private driveway when the driver hit two motorcyclists traveling north on Highway 17.
Both motorcyclists were taken to the hospital Saturday, but the driver of the pickup truck was not injured. Cpl. Collins says neither of the men on motorcycles were wearing helmets.
On Monday, Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler announced that one of the motorcyclists died in the hospital. The victim was identified as 56-year-old James Starnes from Lancaster. According to Fowler, Starnes died at Grand Strand Medical Center Monday at 12:56 p.m. from multiple trauma received in the crash.
Cpl. Collins says the driver of the pickup truck, 56-year-old Billy Funderburke, was charged by the South Carolina Highway Patrol for failure to yield right of way.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.
