A Georgia motorcyclist died after a crash Friday afternoon in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 at 48th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach, officials say.
The North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety sent out a text alert about the crash around 3 pm.
City Spokesperson Pat Dowling says a motorcycle hit a vehicle towing a boat near Barefoot Landing.
Ed Daniel Leatherwood, age 30, of Rex, Ga. died after he was injured in the crash, said Michelle McSpadden, Deputy Horry County Coroner.
The crash happened when the driver of a 2008 Honda motorcycle, who was traveling south on US 17, disregarded a red light, said Cpl. Sonny Collins of the SC Highway Patrol.
The motorcycle then collided with a boat and trailer being pulled by a pickup truck that was turning left off the highway, Collins added.
Leatherwood was not wearing a helmet, Collins said. North Myrtle Beach officials say Leatherwood was riding a stolen motorcycle from Alabama in the incident.
Traffic in the area was slowed for hours after the crash.
The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck, but said that no charges are expected against the pickup truck driver, Collins said.
