CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)-  Emmanuel A.M.E Church held its first Sunday worship service since Dylann Roof was found guilty on 33 federal charges.

Reverend Eric Manning’s sermon was rooted in revival and renewal.

“We have now gone through the valley and dare I say now we ascend to to the mountain top,” said Manning.

The church service began with a grand welcome to all visitors. The gesture was a reminder that Roof was invited by church members to sit through bible study. Mother Emanuel’s hospitality and acceptance remains, regardless of the tragedy.

Reverend Manning spoke about the importance of keeping faith throughout the trial.

“I am so glad that you never gave up. I am so glad that you never gave in. I am so glad that you knew it was dark right now but you also knew that the God that we serve did not bring us this far to leave us,” said Manning.

He urged members to remain steadfast in their love for God and remain confident in the justice system. Manning also spent time praying for the jurors and the survivors.
