MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Hurricane Matthew has cut power to more than 833,000 electric customers in South Carolina as the storm moves its way along the coast. Most of the outages were reported in the Beaufort and the Charleston areas.
Online outage maps from Santee Cooper show more about 7,000 people are without power along the Grand Strand as of noon Saturday.
The City of Georgetown Electric Department has been notified by Santee Cooper that transmission lines through the path of the storm have spot failures. Santee Cooper has crews working, but it could be several days before repaired. In the meantime, City crews are addressing obvious damage in hopes that power will be restored as soon as possible.
Duke Energy is reporting a minimal number of customers in the Pee Dee area are without power.
SCE&G increased the number of off-system crew members from 250 before the storm to more than 1,000 by Saturday morning. The company also had more than 2,000 SCE&G employees assisting with storm restoration efforts.
According to South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G), more than 36,000 customers are in the dark in the southern part of the state, primarily in Charleston, Dorchester and Beaufort Counties as of late Friday night.The Associated Press contributed to this report
