PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say more than 150 animals in need of veterinary care and living in unsanitary conditions have been removed from property in Chatham County.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant for the property located on Silk Hope Gum Spring Road. Deputies found animals were in immediate need of care and living in unsanitary conditions.CLICK HERE for more photos
Some animals were taken to rescue groups while others went to an emergency shelter for medical treatment.
Chatham County Animal Services director Leigh Anne Garrard says her office tried to work with the owner to get proper care for the animals before removing them.
“I am relieved that we were able to come to the aid of these animals today. We have tried to work with the owner to ensure the proper care of the animals, but we reached the point that the animals had to be removed for their well-being,” said Leigh Anne Garrard, director of Chatham County Animal Services.
Officials with animal services received a report of cats and dogs being kept in a small mobile home and livestock lacking proper care.
“The collaboration among national and local groups in Chatham County today has saved numerous lives. We’re grateful to Chatham County Animal Services, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and all of the local rescue groups for stepping up to help these animals,” said Erica Geppi, North Carolina state director for The Humane Society of the United States.
County officials will provide more information about donations and potential adoptions after the animals have received medical care.
