CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) – More development is coming to the city of Conway. The Burroughs and Company announced Wednesday it will build at least three new buildings on the riverfront. The goal is to expand commercial opportunities in the area. A brand new hotel is also part of the plan.
Water brings a lot of people to the city of Conway. Water is what keeps Matthew Varnadore, the owner of Waccamaw Outfitters in business.
“We specialize in kayak rentals, kayak tours, pontoon rentals and pontoon tours.”
Varnadore was pleased to learn three new buildings are coming to Conway. He was even more pleased to learn a brand new hotel is likely.
“It brings more opportunity for me and my business to capitalize on. More visitors to explore the river. I like opportunity.”
So does Conway’s mayor. Barbara Blain-Bellamy says Wednesday’s announcement is only the beginning.
“Ultimately it is our plan to do a master plan, a very carefully laid out master plan of what fits best with what already exists.”
The mayor says the master plan includes a remedy to infrastructure needs, parking, and access to the downtown. One access problem, dealing with riverfront access, is being handled now.
“There’s an immediate plan for one more dock that might accommodate as many as twelve boats and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the master plan might call for even an expansion on the docks that we have now and what we’re going to add.”
New docks will likely bring more people to the water and to town.
“Anytime you have something new come to town, I think it benefits us all.”
Blain-Bellamy says the word ‘all’ means those who visit and those who call the city of Conway their home.
“This is also about the residents of Conway and giving them more reason to stay and giving them something more to enjoy as well.”
We asked the mayor what kinds of businesses are likely to go on the riverfront. She said she’s open to most anything as long as it’s not industrial.
